As I was leaving work today, I ran into the maintenance woman who cleans my office (and other things. I'm not that messy.) She laughed at me and said, "pretty soon you're going to have a shoe factory in your office!"
Huh?
So I asked her if she was commenting on the number of pairs of shoes in my office, and she laughed again and said yes.
Here are the reasons why her comment confused me:
1) I have 4 pairs of shoes in my office. While I have owned fewer pairs of shoes at almost every other point in my life, 4 hardly strikes me as excessive. I work in a courthouse, I have to wear suits, I can't just wear my red Pumas with everything - much as I might like to.
2) A shoe *factory*? Wouldn't it have been more pointed to say I was going to have a shoe *store* or something? I mean, it's not like I have an office full of shoe parts waiting to be assembled or something...
3) I have had the exact same number of pair of shoes in my office, in essentially the same place, since I started this job. Last August. So, um, was last night the first time she's vacuumed my office floor in the last 6 months?

What?!?! You only have FOUR pairs of shoes!?!? Good God! Most definitely NOT excessive. Although, I tend to keep my shoes at home and not in my office. But to each their own.
Also, I think her confusion about what a factory would entail may speak to her profession somewhat. I have nothing against cleaning ladies - they do a very fine job at my house and they are very nice and friendly and I really like them - but they don't exactly need to give themselves mental workouts on a daily basis.
What are you talking about? I would use your red pumas with everything!
